EU and Tunisia: course of relations

1. The Association Agreement entered into force in 1998.
The Association Agreement covers the following areas:

  • Political dialogue
  • Free circulation of goods
  • Rights of business establishment and services
  • Free circulation of capital
  • Free competition
  • Economic cooperation
  • Social and cultural cooperation
  • Financial cooperation


Association Agreement

2. An Action Plan, within the framework of the European Neighborhood Policy, was presented and agreed on in 2004. It stipulates, among other issues, the following measures:

  • Consolidating democracy and state of law reforms
  • Reinforcing political dialogue
  • Creating appropriate environment for foreign direct investments
  • Environment
  • Scientific research
  • Higher education
  • Cooperation in the labor issues
  • Free trade
  • Transport sector development
  • Managing migratory flows
  • Fighting against organized crime

3. EU funding (European Commission) promised and paid in:

  • 1995 to 2006: € 657 million (€ 945 million promised)
  • 2007-2010: € 300 million (promised)


4. The European Investment bank loans:

  • € 1.52 billion (1996-2003)
  • € 1.50 billion (2004-2009)
